Spa in a capsule

By Jane Dobray

Who would have thought I could relax in something that looks like it arrived from outer space? The spa capsule in front of me reminds me of Mork’s egg from the Mork and Mindy show. That definitely shows my age, not to mention my choice of television shows.

When I go to a spa I prefer a hands-on treatment like a Hot Stone massage or a facial. I like to relax and know that I am in the capable hands of my spa therapist. But when I discovered that spa capsules are becoming a popular therapy I thought I would give it a try, even though it just didn’t seem like a true spa treatment. And what happens if the lid gets stuck and it won’t open? Will they call the fire department or just leave me to wilt?

I try to control my anxiety and decide to get on with it.

My spa therapist tells me to disrobe and get onto the cap and lay down. She helps me cover myself with a towel. As I lay on the comfortable bed she spreads a salt and coconut oil scrub mixed with massage oil all over me, exfoliating my skin. I may be here for a while. She then finishes and shuts the capsule lid and turns on a soft mist-like steam. I realize this is the baking part as I call it. My skin will be steamed and all the good nutrients of the scrub will penetrate and hydrate my tired skin.

As I lay there looking at the ceiling, my therapist sits behind me and starts to massage my scalp. During the next 20 minutes I think I might die from enjoyment. I slowly steam away and she keeps checking to ensure I am not too hot. When the treatment is finished she presses a button and the capsule starts to shower me without me moving or raising the lid. Just when I thought it couldn’t get better. The lid opens and after being dried off I am led to a treatment table where I am massaged with an all-over body moisturizer.

This treatment costs $75. It was one hour in length and worth ever penny. A great new experience and they didn’t have to call the fire department.
